CRAFT IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Sara Codarin

This exhibit features the work of contemporary Detroit-area artists and designers staged throughout the rooms in the main residence of Ford House. Selected works explore the meaning and expression of craft in the 21st century through thoughtful and playful juxtapositions with the museum’s collection of the Fords’ art and antiques and the interior architectural features of the Albert Kahn-designed 1929 home. The exhibited pieces provoke questions about the role of technology in contributing to new aesthetic values and trends, the meaning of digital craftsmanship, the relationship between tools, materials, cultures, and economies, and more. The curated show will feature more than 70 works from 35 local artists and designers, with works including robot-made drawings, 3D-printed furniture, and a digital jacquard loom weaving.
